Looking into Bass Fishing Baits

The interest in bass fishing has increased in recent years to the point that it has become quite a competitive sport not only in North America but in other areas too. Some of its growing interest can be attributed to the fishing contests and fishing shows that have sprung up recently. Some of the contests offer quite large cash prizes for the largest fish. These shows and contests have not only tried to drum up interest in bass fishing but in angling in general.

Bass Fishing driven by what?

The interest in bass fishing was thought to have originated in mostly the southern part of the United States, probably due to the fact that bass was regularly caught as a food supply and it was plentiful in the lakes in that area. Now it is considered a sport in the multi-million dollar range. The booming industry of producing various bass fishing equipment from fishing tackle, lures, and even worms, to rods, reels and boats has meant that this hobby has become extremely well known. Bass fishing in competitions is thought to generate around a couple of billion dollars per year.

Nowadays the bass that are caught are seldom used as a food source. It has become almost completely a hobby that most people do for the sport of it and they adhere to the catch and release thinking, meaning that the fish is released back into the lake after being caught. Of course, before being released the fish is admired, photographed, weighed and measured if the angler is serious about the sport. Competition is rampant between bass fishermen, as it is with others such as trout fishermen. The competitive attitude is what keeps them coming back for more.

About the Bass Fishing Baits

The selection of bass fishing baits is huge. One important thing to remember about bass fishing baits is that the temperature of the water can be important as Bass prefer warmer temperatures of water. Color is another important point and using a lure that is colorful can be an advantage. Always ask around and get ideas from other fishermen about what has been a success for them. Look for lures and resemble what the Bass eat. This could be the crawdad and there are lures that are small enough to resemble its size. Some fishermen even suggest using peanut butter and they seem to have had huge success with this.

A topic you will hear a lot about is the million dollar bait. This is also called the Jig and Pig system. This is quite involved and requires you to use specific luring techniques and measurements. It gets its name from the huge success anglers have had with the system and not because the equipment costs a million dollars. Talk to other fishermen about how they use this method and you will learn a lot.

The choice of bait will often depend on who you talk to and you can achieve success with many different bass fishing baits. It takes practice to perfect the right combination of baits and lures. Of course practice is what most fishermen want to do, after all that is what it is all about, sitting out on the lake trying over and over to get it right. The reward is definitely worth the patience.
